AFCON 2023: Ivory Coast defeats Senegal on penalties, knocking out the previous winners and sending the hosts through

Senegal were eliminated by hosts Cote d'Ivoire thanks to a winning penalty kick from former Barcelona player Franck Kessi. After dominating in regular time, Ivory Coast overcame Senegal through penalty shootouts to qualify to the AFCON quarterfinals against the reigning champions.The Ivorians, who barely made it as one of the best losers, were the underdogs going into the match against Aliou Cisse's team, who had won the title the previous year and had been undefeated in the group stage. Senegal took the lead early on, but the Ivorians equalized late on—no more than they deserved, given their superior play balance. The equalizer pushed for extra time, which the Elephants won 5–4 after 30 minutes of penalty shootouts.
