Argentina plans to give Messi a huge honor following Maradona's unsuccessful bid

AFA has chosen to retire the legendary number 10 shirt in remembrance of Lionel Messi's legacy with the Albiceleste. Years after trying to do the same for Diego Maradona, the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) has decided to retire the number 10 shirt when current captain and wearer of the legendary number, Lionel Messi, calls it quits on his tenure with the Albiceleste. At the 1986 Mundial, Maradona wore the number 10 jersey and guided Argentina to their second Mundial victory. Before Messi came along, he was without a doubt the best Argentine football player of all time, and the AFA made an effort to retire the number once he retired. However, they had to put the kit number back in use during the 2002 World Cup due to a FIFA ruling that mandated teams to occupy jersey numbers 1-27 for international tournaments.
