Chelsea advanced to the EFL Cup semifinals by defeating Newcastle in penalty shootouts. Chelsea was granted a reprieve from execution and an opportunity to retry in penalty shootouts, which Pochettino's team prevailed in to move on to the EFL Cup's next round, thanks to a late goal by Mhykhailo Mudryk.Chelsea supporters are still heartbroken about league football, but at least they have comfort in the EFL Cup. The Blues' victory against Blackburn in the previous round got them into the final eight, setting them up to win the first formal trophy of a regular English football season.Callum Wilson's goal early on for Newcastle evoked memories of Chelsea's league success, but Mudryk's late strike startled everyone and forced penalties. Chelsea scored all their attempts, while the Magpies were only half as efficient, as the Stamford Bridge residents booked a spot in the final four.
