Ericsson report forecasts 85% of global population to have 5G by 2029, with Africa leading the way

According to a new estimate, mobile subscriptions in Sub-Saharan Africa are expected to reach 1.1 billion by the end of 2029, with 5G being the type that will increase at the quickest rate between 2023 and 2029, at 60% yearly.According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, published in November 2023, 85% of people on Earth would have access to 5G by 2029, with Africa setting the pace. Sub-Saharan Africa's mobile subscriber growth can be ascribed to favorable economic conditions, progressive regulatory actions for expanding network coverage, and the growing necessity of connection for voice and data communications as well as the provision of services like banking. The report estimates that 4G subscriptions will account for 49% of the total by 2029, while 2G subscriptions will maintain a significant share of total subscriptions at 27%, mainly due to the region's largely rural population.
