Trade conflicts between Tanzania and Kenya cause some in East Africa

Kenya's imports from Tanzania have fallen at the fastest rate in seven years, during which time Nairobi avoided Dar es Salaam and bought more items from as far away as Egypt due to new trade conflicts. According to a report by the Tanzanian news site The Citizen, spending on goods trucked from Tanzania in the six months prior to June decreased by roughly a third as a result of restrictions on cereal shipments to Kenya.Tanzania imposed new restrictions on grain trade with its neighbors in the East African Community bloc throughout the review period. These rules severely restricted the flow of maize into Kenya. The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) collected data showing that the value of Kenya's imports from Tanzania decreased by 31.12%. The decrease was the quickest since 2016 from Sh27.12 billion, a record-high for the half-year period, in a comparable period the previous year. At the height of the disputes between Nairobi and the government of former Tanzanian President John Magufuli (dead), imports for the first half of the year had dropped 36.99 percent to Sh6.06 billion
