The NDPC is investigating online lenders after receiving over 400 complaints

Due to client concerns, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, has announced that it will investigate online lending organizations as well as certain other institutions.According to a commission source, a large number of internet lenders, often known as loan sharks, are on the panel's radar and will be scrutinized before they are given permission to begin operations. In addition to online lenders, the NDPC has targeted the data controllers of some of Nigeria's biggest new-generation banks, insurance firms, and colleges, after receiving approximately 400 complaints from clients. The commission also said government-owned institutions were not left out as it would not fail to prosecute heads of any government agency found guilty of data breaches. The fresh investigations into some data controllers of the affected institutions come amid the recent signing of the Data Protection Act 2023 which places a fine of two per cent of the gross revenue of any company found guilty of data violation.
