Namibia receives $485,000 grant for solar electricity project to power 50,000 homes

A $485,000 grant from the African Development Bank's Urban and Municipal Development Fund (UMDF) has been awarded for a solar electricity project in Namibia that would light around 50,000 houses in the capital. The "Informal Settlement Renewable Electrification and Upgrading Program" would directly benefit around 200,000 individuals in Windhoek, where 20% of the population lacks access to electricity. The Urban and Municipal Development Fund helps governments invest in sustainable urban development for more climate-resilient, resilient, livable, and productive cities, thereby promoting national socioeconomic development and poverty reduction. One impact of Windhoek's rapid and unrestrained urbanization is the formation of informal settlements, which are distinguished by non-electrified areas and undeveloped economic activities and considerably affect people's quality of life.
