Nigeria has been elected to the UN Economic and Social Council

Similarly, in a by-election for a seat lost by Greece in the Western European and Others Group, Member States chose Türkiye.The United Nations General Assembly elected Nigeria to a three-year term on the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the United Nations' economic branch, commencing January 1, 2024.Nigeria will hold the seat from 2024 until 2026. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigeria is the only country that received all of the votes cast by the members for the 18 open seats on the Council. There was no abstention or vote against Nigeria, since all 191 Member States present voted for it.Other 17 countries to serve with Nigeria are France, Germany, Haiti, Japan, Kenya, Liechtenstein, Mauritania, Nepal, Pakistan, Paraguay, Poland, Senegal, Spain, Suriname, United Kingdom, Uruguay and Zambia Similarly, Member States elected Türkiye in a by-election for a seat vacated by Greece in the Western European and Others Group. Türkiye’s term will start on January 1, 2024 and run through December of the following year. In that same election, Member States voted to fill the ongoing vacancy in the Eastern European Group.
