INEC names Fintiri the winner of the contentious Adamawa governorship election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate kept his seat after receiving 430,861 votes, defeating his major rival, Aisha Dahiru alias Binani of the All Progressives Congress, who received 398,788 votes. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has named Governor Ahmadu Fintiri the winner of the Adamawa State supplementary election.Fintiri's triumph was preceded by a sequence of political intrigues and drama that nearly tipped the scales in favor of Binani, who was declared the winner of the election unlawfully while collation was still in progress.Recall that supplementary election was conducted in Adamawa state on Saturday, April 15, 2023, between Fintiri and Binani after the the March 18 governorship was declared inconclusive. But while the collation of the results was underway, Hudu Yunusa Ari, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) illegally declared Binani as the winner of the election. The controversial declaration prompted INEC to suspend Yunusa and also annulled his declaration. On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, after its meeting involving all national commissioners in Abuja, the electoral umpire in a statement asked the police to investigate and prosecute Yunusa.
