Senator Achonu has been elected as the Labour Party's governorship candidate in Imo

Achonu thanked the delegates for their trust and the stakeholders for their assistance. Senator Athan Achonu, who represented Imo North Senatorial District, was named the Labour Party (LP) candidate for Imo's governorship election on Saturday night. Alex Otti, Chairman of the Electoral Panel and Abia Governor-elect, declared the results in Owerri, saying Achonu received 134 votes. According to Otti, Achonu defeated his closest competitor, Maj.-Gen. Lincoln Ogunewe, who received 121 votes. Martin Agbaso received 13 votes, Basil Maduka received one vote, Ibe Ike received three votes, Sam Amadi received four votes, and retired Capt. David Mbamara received five votes. According to Otti, Kelechi Nwagwu received nine votes, AIG Charles Agomuo received one vote, and Ndidi Anike, the only female contestant among the 16 candidates, received one vote. The chairman praised the 296 delegates for their calm demeanor throughout the exercise, as well as the aspirants for their fortitude. He urged all aspirants to back the party's governorship candidate "so that we can move as a team to win the trophy."
