The police commissioner also reminded the DPOs that it was free to release criminals on bond.Usaini Gumel, the commissioner of police for Kano State, issued a warning to divisional police officers (DPOs) in the state on Tuesday, advising them not to charge or hold people without bond for more than 48 hours.According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Gumel delivered the warning while visiting a few police units in the city of Kano.He said that while suspects were still considered innocent unless proven guilty by a competent court, holding them in custody for more than 24 hours before bringing them before a judge for prosecution amounted to a breach of their rights. The commissioner of police also reminded the DPOs that bailing of suspects was free. He urged them to always ensure the fundamental human rights of suspects at all times, and avoid actions capable of jeopardising their welfare and well-being.
