UN condemns unintentional bombing in Kaduna that claimed the lives of nearly 80 civilians

The UN reports that this is the most recent in a string of at least four bombings that have caused significant civilian deaths since 2017.In northern Nigeria, many civilians were killed in an attack that has been fiercely opposed by the United Nations (UN).A misinterpretation of the situation resulted in a Nigerian Army drone operating in the northwest of Kaduna State accidentally taking down at least 85 innocent persons while it was supposed to be targeting armed groups. This regrettable event, which is among the biggest military bombing occurrences in the nation, has caused intense outrage. In response to the heartbreaking news, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered a comprehensive investigation into the situation. In a statement, UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Seif Magango expressed concern over the civilian deaths, terming them as accidental but urging authorities to take decisive measures to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in the future. "While we note that the authorities have termed the civilian deaths as accidental, we call on them to take all feasible steps in the future to ensure civilians and civilian infrastructure are protected," said Magango.
