Appeal Court authorizes Sylva of the APC to run for governor of Bayelsa

Additionally, Sylva was granted ?1 million by the court. On Tuesday, the Federal High Court of Abuja's ruling, which had declared Timipre Sylva's All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination for governor of Bayelsa invalid, was overturned by the Appeal Court of Abuja. In a unanimous ruling read by Justice Binta Zubairu, the three-member panel determined that Demesuoyefa Kolomo, the person who brought the lawsuit to the trial court, did not have the locus standi (legal right) to bring the case because she did not participate in the primary that resulted in Sylva being selected as the party's nominee. The panel agreed with Ahmed Raji (SAN), the attorney for Sylva, that the court lacked jurisdiction to consider a suit in which a party lacked locus. "The issue of jurisdiction is fundamental and the bedrock of any trial, and a trial without jurisdiction is a nullity," Justice Zubairu said.
