Labour faults FG for releasing ?180bn palliative package to State Govt

The unions claim that if the FG hands up program implementation to state governors, the palliatives won't reach the intended recipients. The Federal Government's decision to give the State Governments a palliative package of #180 billion dollars to lessen the impact of subsidy removal is unpopular with organized labor because the union claims the state governors will thwart the scheme. The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress are adamant that handing up the #5 billion to each state's governor would not benefit the poor. In order to lessen the impact of the loss of fuel subsidies, the Federal Government (FG) announced on Thursday, August 17, 2023, that each state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would receive #5 billion palliatives and 180 trucks of rice. The elimination of gasoline subsidies in May has made the economic plight of Nigerians worse since the cost of food and petroleum has skyrocketed.
