New sanctions are placed on the coup leaders in the Niger Republic by ECOWAS.By enacting a number of additional penalties against the organizers of the recent coup in the Niger Republic, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has acted decisively. The coup leaders and their associates are the target of these sanctions, which were formally announced on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. They include a travel ban and an asset freeze. This momentous breakthrough was revealed in an address to State House reporters by presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngeale. Ngeale revealed that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) coordinated the implementation of the penalties. The official did not go into detail about the specifics of the sanctions, though. The ECOWAS bloc had previously issued an ultimatum of seven days to the coup leaders, demanding the immediate reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum, who was ousted during the coup. The alternative to this, as warned by the regional body, was the imposition of further punitive measures.
